·Teacher Education Programs Admission Criteria
The advisement process is particularly crucial for teacher education students. It is suggested that freshman or other interested students declare a pre-major in elementary education. This procedure will result in assignment to a teacher education adviser familiar with the current curricular and admission requirements and with any impending changes that may occur prior to the student's admission semester.
·Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE)
The Early Childhood Education (birth to kindergarten) program leads to the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Students have two (2) options to choose from in completing this degree: A) Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) Certification Track and B) Non-Certification Track.
·Elementary Education Program
The Elementary Education Program at NKU is a four-year program leading to a degree of Bachelor of Arts. It focuses on the educational and developmental needs of children in the early childhood years (P-5) and is the first step toward attaining teacher certification in the state of Kentucky.
·Middle Grades Education Program
The Middle Grades Education Program is part of a four-year program leading to a Bachelor's degree. Students choose two areas of content focus from the following: language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, or special education. A four-semester progression of course work includes a strong foundation in middle school philosophy, structure, and instruction with extensive field experiences in a variety of middle school settings.
·Secondary Education Program
The Secondary Grades Education Program prepares students for certification in one of the following certification areas: Biological Science (Grades 8-12), English (Grades 8-12), Mathematics (Grades 8-12), Earth/space science (Grades 8-12), Chemistry (Grades 8-12), Physics (Grades 8-12) and Social Studies (Grades 8-12). Students also enter the Secondary Education Program if they are seeking certification in one of the following areas: Art (Grades P-12), Business and Marketing (Grades 5-12), French (Grades P-12), Music (Grades P-12), or Spanish (Grades P-12).
·Special Education Program
The Special Education Program prepares students interested in teaching children with mild disabilities. The special education program prepares teachers for children with learning disabilities, mild mental retardation, emotional and behavioral disorders, and orthopedic impairments. Students interested in becoming certified in special education should select either elementary, middle grades, or secondary education and then choose the special education certification option. Graduates of the special education program are in high demand across Kentucky and the U.S.
·Health & Physical Education
Students desiring to teach in the public, parochial, or private schools in health education and physical education should choose the physical education major (teacher certification tracks) and the health education option. In addition to requirements for the teacher education program, these programs may lead to certification to teach in elementary and secondary schools.
·Exercise Science
Students interested in the general field of physical education as professional training for careers in fitness and recreation in non-school settings such as corporate fitness and recreation agencies should pursue the physical education major (recreation/fitness track). These students might also elect to pursue the health education minor, business administration minor, accounting minor, or marketing minor.
·Athletic Training
The Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training is an allied health degree offered through the department of Kinesiology, Health, and Educational Foundations. NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainers provide prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to athletes and the physically active. ·Counseling and Human Services Program
The Counseling and Human Services Program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in the growing and varied field of human services. Students are exposed to classroom instruction and field experiences that prepare them for positions in a variety of work settings.
·Social Work Program
The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program instructs students in the fundamental knowledge, values, ethics, and practices for a generalist social work career. The coursework and related field practicums prepare graduates for the many diverse challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities of social work practice. The coursework provides a breadth and depth of knowledge in areas specific to social work including social work practice theory and skills, social work policy and services, human behavior and social environment, and social work research.
